Legend: "Legend says that Lord Marundeeswarar taught Sage Agastya magical medicine. Hence, the Lord derived this name. Mythology also says that it was Agastya, , who named the deity ""Aushadeeswarar"" (aushad means medicine) .The temple is a great place of worship for people suffering with diseases and various health problems. Sage Valmiki, the author of epic Ramayana had visited this temple to worship Lord Marundeeswarar. After this incident, this place came to be known as Thiruvalmikiyur. Later, the name was changed to Thiruvanmiyur.
The presiding deity is in a lingam form and is depicted as Swayambu. The Lord is also called ""Palvannanathan"" since Kamadhenu, the celestial cow, used to shower him with milk constantly.
